Payments Shouldn’t Be Where You Lose the Player

A gaming platform came to us with a familiar problem. Players were reaching checkout and not completing the payment. Not fraud. Not abandonment. Declines, a lot of them, for reasons their existing acquirer couldn't explain.

We looked at the numbers. Authorisation rates were well below where they should have been, and risk and “do not honor” declines made up a significant share of the failures. Each one was quietly taking revenue off the top before it ever reached the platform.

The platform had already paid to acquire those players. The players had chosen the product and were ready to pay. The payment setup was the only thing in the way.

What We Changed

We didn't just swap in as a new acquirer. We changed how their payments were routed and where they could be accepted.

That meant routing across our own acquiring, partner acquiring and Merchant of Record (MoR) options, backed by local licences. It also meant access to the local payment methods players actually reach for, such as Alipay, WeChat Pay, GrabPay, Boost, DuitNow, GCash and PayPay. Alongside that, we used advanced decline analysis to find out why payments were failing.

That isn't a payments upgrade. It's revenue the platform was losing every day, recovered.

The Bigger Problem

This points to the problem we set out to solve. Gaming platforms scaling across Asia don't need more processors. They need consistent coverage wherever their players are, and for whichever payment method they prefer.

Most gaming businesses are global from day one, but their payment setup is stitched together country by country and provider by provider. One acquirer for Europe, another for Asia, separate providers for local payment methods, and more again for markets the main acquirer can't support. Consistency breaks down, and approval rates quietly leak away.

When we talk to gaming merchants, the conversation comes back to four things:

One Integration, More Routes to Yes

So we built Nomupay to give gaming platforms one integration into the coverage they need across every market they operate in:

  • Local licences and acquiring across key APAC and European markets
  • Direct acquiring, alongside partner acquiring where it's the better fit
  • MoR options where a merchant needs them
  • 200+ local and alternative payment methods, with payments accepted in 145+ currencies
  • Global payouts to 170+ countries in local currency

Coverage on its own isn't the point. The best route for a payment changes with the player's country, payment method, issuer, transaction type and risk profile. Because we have more than one route available, we can send each transaction the way it's most likely to be approved.

We don't need to claim one acquiring route is the best everywhere. Our advantage is that we don't have to rely on one route everywhere.

Stopping Fraud Without Stopping Players

Fraud prevention shouldn't mean declining more transactions. The aim isn't to weaken controls. It's to tell genuine fraud apart from normal player behaviour much more accurately.

We do that with routing, risk configuration set up for gaming, authentication applied where it adds value, and better use of transaction data. The result is that fraud stays controlled while more genuine players get through.

Just the Start

Gaming companies work hard to bring players to checkout. Payments shouldn't be the reason they leave.

One integration. Broad global and local coverage. More ways for players to pay. Better routing. Higher approval rates. And this is just the start of what we're bringing to gaming.
